About the Role
We are looking for an Email Marketing Specialist to own our email channel from end to end. You will build and send campaigns, segment audiences, set up automated flows, track performance, and ensure legal compliance. You will work alongside the Copywriter (for email body copy) and Graphic Designer (for email visuals), but you are responsible for the email platform, deliverability, and overall email strategy.
Responsibilities
Campaign Execution
- Build and design email templates using drag-and-drop editors (Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Constant Contact, HubSpot, or similar) – or code basic HTML/CSS when needed.
- Write subject lines and preview text (preheaders) that drive opens – collaborate with the Copywriter for longer body copy.
- Schedule and deploy one‑time broadcasts (newsletters, promotions, announcements).
- Ensure every email renders correctly on desktop, mobile, and dark mode.
List Management & Segmentation
- Segment email lists based on user behavior (e.g., past purchases, engagement level, signup source, cart abandonment).
- Clean and maintain lists – remove hard bounces, manage unsubscribes, handle spam complaints.
- Import/export subscriber data safely (CSV/API) without breaking GDPR/CAN-SPAM rules.
Automation & Lifecycle Marketing
- Set up and maintain automated email flows:
- Welcome series for new subscribers.
- Abandoned cart sequences.
- Post-purchase follow-ups (review requests, cross-sells).
- Re-engagement campaigns for inactive subscribers.
- Birthday or anniversary automations (if applicable).
2. Map out customer lifecycle stages and trigger appropriate emails.
Deliverability & Compliance
- Monitor deliverability metrics: inbox placement rate, spam score, bounce rate.
- Troubleshoot deliverability issues (authentication: SPF, DKIM, DMARC; sender reputation).
- Ensure legal compliance:
– CAN-SPAM (US): clear unsubscribe link, physical address, truthful subject lines.
– GDPR (Europe): proof of consent, right to be forgotten.
– CASL (Canada): implied vs. express consent. - Maintain an unsubscribe and preference center that works instantly.
Analytics & Optimization
- Track and report on key metrics for each campaign:
– Open rate, click-through rate (CTR), conversion rate.
– Bounce rate (hard/soft), unsubscribe rate, spam complaint rate.
– Revenue per email (if ecommerce). - Run A/B tests on subject lines, send times, sender names, and CTAs.
- Provide weekly/monthly reports with actionable insights (e.g., “Segment X opens 2x more than segment Y – send them more offers”).
Collaboration
- Work with the Copywriter to refine email body copy, CTAs, and value propositions.
- Brief the Graphic Designer on email-specific visuals: banner dimensions, button colors, alt text for images.
- Coordinate with the Social Media Manager to align email campaigns with social posts.
Requirements
- Proven experience as an Email Marketing Specialist, Email Coordinator, or similar role – portfolio or case studies required (screenshots of campaigns, metrics).
- Proficiency with at least one email service provider (ESP): Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Constant Contact, HubSpot, ActiveCampaign, or Brevo (Sendinblue).
- Understanding of HTML/CSS basics for email (tables, inline styles, responsive design) – you don’t need to be a developer, but you should be able to tweak code.
- Experience segmenting lists and building automated flows.
- Knowledge of deliverability best practices (warm-up, authentication, spam trap avoidance).
- Familiarity with CAN-SPAM, GDPR, and CASL compliance requirements.
- Analytical mindset – comfortable with Excel/Google Sheets and ESP reporting dashboards.
- Strong copywriting skills for subject lines and preview text (short, punchy, curiosity-driven).
Nice‑to‑Have (Not Required)
– Experience with ecommerce email (Klaviyo, Omnisend, Shopify Email).
– Basic design skills (Canva, Photoshop) to resize or tweak email graphics.
– Knowledge of A/B testing methodology (statistical significance, sample size).
– Familiarity with SMS marketing (as an extension of email).
What Success Looks Like (First 90 Days)
- Achieve or maintain open rate above [30]% and CTR above [3]%
- Build and launch at least 3 automated flows (e.g., welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase).
- Reduce spam complaint rate below 0.1% and hard bounce rate below 2%.
- Deliver weekly reports that directly inform content and design decisions.
- No compliance violations (clear unsubscribe, proper consent records).
